Community Forest
Seeing the Forest AND the Tree
A Tree Fund project and partnership between the Foundation of the State Arboretum and Clarke County Public Schools. In addition, the H. O. Peet Foundation and
Casey Trees provided support for the project.

What is it? A year-round project focused on developing tree biology and ecology curriculum that integrates English, Mathematics, and Science.

  • Who? Third grade students and teachers of rural Clarke County Public Schools (CCPS) in Virginia, State Arboretum of Virginia & Blandy Experimental Farm Education and Arboretum staff.

  • What did we do? Explored forest ecology at the State Arboretum of Virginia, schoolyards, and the classrooms throughout the school year. Created engaging, interdisciplinary activities, developed lasting relationships as we planted native trees as part of a forest restoration project in our Community Forest grove.

  • What is next? Your turn! Use the lessons we developed to teach about trees using multidisciplinary activities in your indoor classroom and outdoor schoolyard. See the 'Tree Fund Lesson Plans' link on the left.
